The latest article today (7 February, 2019) in the Sydney Morning Herald (SMH) about clients receiving preventative psychologist appointments
is another kick in the guts to counsellors and psychotherapists across Australia. Professional and clinical counsellors and psychotherapists have been doing the hard yards of preventative work across the general public of Australia – if clients do not, or cannot receive Medicare.

Counsellors and psychotherapists work in preventative measures, not the curative measures that have been implemented in the Medicare benefits scheme for psychologists and social workers. The old adage of ‘prevention is better than cure’ applies to this scenario.

It seems like the system is broken and we need to scrap it entirely and start again with professional counsellors NOT psychologists – being at the forefront of the preventative new way forward with our broken mental health system.
